Kihon

Kihon are the basic techniques of karate, the stances, blocks, punches and kicks. While we give them Japanese names we also use English versions to enable students to understand what they are doing. These techniques are the foundation on which we build karate.

Kumite

Kumite is the "fighting" aspect of karate. It is usually pre-arranged so that the attacker and defender work together in harmony and safety. With time and practise the karate-ka moves on to "free" sparring (Juyu Kumite).

Competition/Sport karate is usually free sparring.

Kata

Kata are formal exercises that follow a pattern. They improve concentration, stamina and balance. They are the true "heart" of karate and contain many self-defence moves.

The kata taught at Shintai are the Shotokan kata of Kanazawa Soke, but we also teach some JKA kata and also Kata from other styles.
