Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any special clothes/equipment? - No. Most students will want to wear a Gi (Karate suit) after several lessons. Usually we recommend leaving purchase of a Gi until you are sure you wish to continue. A new Gi can be purchased from the club for about £15 (secondhand ones are often available for as little as £5). You do not have to buy a "club" Gi, as with some clubs.

Do I need a licence? - If you wish to continue training after an initial period of about 6 weeks you will have to get an IASK licence. This will enable you to grade. If you belong to another association and have a licence with them you can train at Shintai, but will be unable to grade, unless you get an IASK licence.

Do I have to pay in advance? - Shintai karate is currently a Pay as You Go club ( though discount for advanced payment maybe possible). Currently we believe we are the best value for money club in the Home Counties (almost certainly the cheapest - with no hidden costs, e.g. "intermediate " or "junior" gradings, additional club fees on top of Association fees).

Will I always have expert instruction? - Sensei Tyrie always teaches at the clubs. He has over 30 years experience and is graded 6th Dan. Sometimes other Instructors "Guest" - these are always of a very high standard. Sensei Tyrie may be assisted by his senior students, but unlike some clubs, every student has instruction every lesson by Sensei Tyrie.
